Maharashtra plans Kochi model to raze huge illegal buildings

The official told TOI that talks were on both at the local- and state-level to use Sarwate’s expertise to demolish the structures through controlled implosion (see box), for which the administrative nod is in place.

PUNE: The Maharashtra government plans to replicate the Kochi model to pull down the illegal structures by roping in demolition expert S B Sarwate, a senior official in the urban development department said on Wednesday.

The official told TOI that talks were on both at the local- and state-level to use Sarwate’s expertise to demolish the structures through controlled implosion (see box), for which the administrative nod is in place.

The Kerala government had roped in Sarwate (70), a mining engineer and demolition expert from Indore holding the Guinness world record for imploding the maximum number of buildings in India, to help it guide the demolition of the Maradu apartments in Kochi. The Supreme Court had ordered the demolition of the apartment buildings — Jains Coral Cove, H2O Holy Faith, Golden Kayaloram and the twin towers of Alfa Serene — as they violated the Coastal Regulation Zone norms and were located dangerously close to the Vembanad Lake.

“The demolition was done without any damage to any nearby structure. It was a humungous task, as it required a lot of follow-ups and there were five buildings,” Kochi sub-collector S Snehil Kumar Singh told TOI.

Sarwate told TOI over phone that the Kochi demolition method could be used to bring down huge illegal structures in Maharashtra too. “The demolition in Kochi required over 400kg of explosives. It was done to perfection without affecting any structure in the 100m radius. The method has been used for some structures in Navi Mumbai and Nagpur,” he said.

A Maharashtra revenue official said a municipal corporation can take a call on using the technology to raze structures identified for demolition.
