BMC Pushes Forward with Mumbai Coastal Road Project's First Phase

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is making strides in the completion of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project's initial phase by initiating the installation of girders to link Worli with the Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL). These girders, ranging from 44 to 136 metres, are being strategically placed in segments to bridge the 850-metre gap. Due to the lack of land strips for launching, barges anchored in the Arabian Sea are being utilized for this process.

Challenges arise from the shallow waters and dense bedrock at Worli, necessitating continuous 24-hour monitoring to ensure safe girder launching during optimal sea conditions. The project encountered a setback when the fishing community advocated for a wider navigation span, prompting a shift in design to 'Bow-String' girder bridges instead of additional pillars.

Fabricated at JNPT (Raigad) and Ambala, the girders are transported to the site for assembly. Progress has been made in bridging the gap between Coastal Road's Worli end and the Sea Link, with two girders already in place on the southbound arm and the remaining two to be launched soon. Subsequent installation will focus on the northbound arm, with a targeted deadline set for May to open both arms of the Coastal Road. The bridge's total length will span 850 metres, with approximately 270 metres composed of steel and the remainder of concrete.

However, uncertainties loom over the opening date of the Coastal Road's southbound arm, initially scheduled for February 19. Sources indicate a potential delay, possibly pushing the opening just before the Lok Sabha poll code of conduct takes effect.

In essence, BMC's latest efforts in launching girders for the Mumbai Coastal Road Project aim to seamlessly connect Worli with the Bandra Worli Sea Link, addressing an 850-metre gap. Overcoming challenges such as shallow waters and dense bedrock, the project undergoes meticulous planning for girder launches. Adjustments in design to accommodate the fishing community's preferences and the fabrication and transportation of girders mark significant milestones. Despite progress, uncertainties persist regarding the opening of the southbound arm, potentially affecting the project's timeline.
