New Suburban Railway Station to Alleviate Thane and Mulund Congestion: Completion Set for December 2025

In a recent announcement, Shiv Sena UBT MP Rajan Vichare revealed that the construction of a new suburban railway station between Thane and Mulund is on track for completion by December 2025. Vichare, who had initially discussed the project during his tenure as Mayor of Thane, emphasized its significance in alleviating congestion at Thane and Mulund stations, with anticipated reductions of approximately 30% and 21%, respectively.

Situated on the west side of the existing rail lines, the station aims to serve residents in burgeoning areas such as Ghodbunder Road and the Thane-Mulund fringe, including Wagle Estate. Originally proposed in the early 2000s to ease the strain on Thane station, which witnesses around seven lakh daily footfalls, the project was later incorporated into the Smart City initiative by the Thane corporation.

Securing approval for a ₹289 crore proposal from the central government under the stewardship of then Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, the project encountered initial obstacles, including a court-imposed stay, which was lifted in 2023, facilitating expedited progress.

Providing insights into the station's layout, Vichare outlined plans for a 14.8-acre facility within the Thane Regional Mental Hospital premises, adjacent to the Eastern Express Highway. The station will feature three platforms catering to suburban trains traveling to and from Mumbai, along with two passenger bridges for seamless connectivity. Additionally, approximately three acres will be allocated for track laying and administrative infrastructure, including an elevated road with three exits onto LBS Road and the Eastern Express Highway.
