Maharashtra Cabinet Greenlights Mumbai Central Park Proposal

The Maharashtra state cabinet has approved a proposal to develop a sprawling "Mumbai Central Park" on 120 acres of the Mahalaxmi Racecourse land, mirroring iconic parks like Central Park in Manhattan and Hyde Park in London. This initiative aims to transform the space into an international standard park for public enjoyment. The state government will hand over the designated land to the BMC for park development, following approval in an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) of the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) where 76% of members voted in favor of returning 120 acres.

According to an official statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), the park's land allocation includes 175 acres from the newly constructed Mumbai coastal road and 120 acres from the Mahalaxmi Racecourse. Additionally, the cabinet has approved the renewal of RWITC's lease for 91 acres for 30 years, with the BMC set to recover the difference in payable amount during the renewal period.

The Mahalaxmi Racecourse, spread over 226 acres, has been under BMC and state government jurisdiction. Established in 1914, it holds Grade II-B heritage status. Negotiations are underway to determine the extent of land RWITC will relinquish for the park, with the government ensuring the continuity of racing activities. Despite some criticism regarding potential loss of open space, the initiative reflects a shift towards prioritizing public green spaces in Mumbai.

City Guardian Minister Deepak Kesarkar has indicated plans to repurpose a section of the racecourse for the theme park, featuring attractions such as a Ferris wheel inspired by the London Eye. While facing implementation concerns, the project signifies Mumbai's commitment to enhancing public leisure and recreational amenities. The transformation of the Mahalaxmi Racecourse into Mumbai Central Park represents a significant step towards creating accessible green infrastructure and promoting urban well-being.
